Care instructions

for your Handcrafted End-Grain Cutting Board

An end-grain cutting board is a beautiful addition to your kitchen and with the proper care could last a lifetime. Follow these care instructions for the best results.

At least twice a year (depending upon the use or if your board starts to look dry), apply an even coat of food grade mineral oil (sold as laxative in drug stores) to all surfaces of your wood cutting board using a cloth or disposable towel. Allow the mineral oil to fully penetrate through the wood fibres overnight then wipe off any excess oil. Apply additional oil to any visible dry spots.

For additional protection a layer of beeswax may be applied to the surface of the board to act as a moisture barrier. This can be done by mixing 4 parts mineral oil with 1 part beeswax over low heat and letting it cool to create a paste that can be rubbed into the surface. This is not absolutely necessary as the oil layer will be enough to maintain the board.

DO NOT cut fish or poultry on the cutting board work surface unless you have applied beeswax.  The moisture barrier must be intact prior to cutting any type of fish, seafood, or poultry on the cutting board work surface. ALWAYS CLEAN THE CUTTING BOARD THOROUGHLY AFTER CUTTING FISH OR POULTRY.

DO NOT allow liquids of any type to stand on the cutting board for long periods of time. Over time they can soak into the wood causing the cutting board to expand, the wood to soften, and affect the strength of the glued joints.

Sanitize your cutting board by wiping all surfaces down with mild dish soap and water. Allow to dry thoroughly. DO NOT wash your wood cutting board with harsh detergents of any type. DO NOT put your wood cutting boards into the dishwasher.
